Secret Mindfulness Trick

You’ve heard me talk about my struggle to slow down and be in the present moment. This week, I discovered yet another way to be in the now: compose a gratitude list. Naming ten things I was grateful for required me to sit quietly. Suddenly I wasn’t rushing about. I wasn’t thinking about what I want to change. I wasn’t regretting something I did. I was giving thanks for things that are true, right now.

I’m sharing my list because this may be the secret mindfulness trick you need right now!

  1. I’m not on RAGBRAI (Great Bike Ride Across Iowa).
  2. Air conditioning.
  3. India Star.
  4. My computer.
  5. My new walking shoes.
  6. Everyone in my extended family is well.
  7. We are going to entertain two of my sisters in August.
  8. An upcoming visit with my oldest son and his wife in their home on the Mississippi River.
  9. In August, face-to-face time with one of my granddaughters and her family.
  10. Precious time with my great-grandson Sully so I can read him “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!”
