Time: Early evening, Christmas Day
Task: Riffling through Jon Burras’ book, Return to Nature,
Purpose: Need information on magical thinking.
Action: An owl hoots loudly outside my house.
My Usual Response: Find Animal Energies book by authors Garry Buffalo Horn Man and Sherry Firedancer. Read facts about owls and what “medicine” they offer, and explore owls vulnerabilities and blind spots and what these may communicate to me.
What Animal Energies offers:”If an owl has oriented on you, you can be certain that an aspect of your life is going to change, in a big way. Some people believe that Owl only comes to those things that are about to die. So not fear, though, for this does not mean physical death as much as it means the letting go of some part of you that is not serving you. Owls, with their spectral senses, are guides through the dark tunnel of fear and change to the certain light shining at the other end. Thank Owl for its willingness to guide you through its shadowy realm.”
What Jon Burras offers: “Magical thinking is a way to interpret the world by telling ourselves a story. For instance, most people consider a dog’s bark disturbing. But when an owl makes a noise, it becomes a mystical experience.”
Let me know what you think. Remember there are no wrong answers.
Thanks for exploring the mystery – Nicky Mendenhall
Look closely at the image – it’s a barred owl!

It is probably worth noting that people (including myself) who believe they have had experiences of animals showing up with specific messages from the universe tend to make a distinction between those times and other times when they just happen to run into an animal going about its own business without any meaning attached to its having been seen. So it is not just a matter of seeing an animal. There is quite a lot of intuition involved in this type of thing.
For instance, we live in a rural area in which turkey vultures are seen on a daily basis. Normally I don't give it a thought except to note to myself the magnificence of their flight which never fails to delight me. However a few years ago my husband and I were in a situation in which, after decades long planning to build a new home, we finally took the decisive step of hiring an architect. The afternoon that we made the decision we felt a sense of relief and new energy come into our lives. And moments later, as we drove out of our driveway, we spotted a turkey vulture sitting where we had never before (nor ever since) seen a turkey vulture sit…right at the very top of the telephone pole at the end of our driveway! . It struck me immediately as something unusual and as a "sign".
Later, when I looked up turkey vulture in my power animal book it said "eliminating stuck energy", which exactly matched the situation of having finally gotten this long stuck project moving forward.
I am a believer in communing with animals. Last summer, I had a particularly moving experience when I took a walk in a park near the Mississippi River. I had the park all to myself on a Sunday morning. I was taking pictures of wildflowers and rock formations, when overhead I noticed three (that's right three) bald eagles circling over me. Their circle was tight, no more than ten feet diameter, directly over my head.
I stood still as I soaked in the mystery of the moment. They continued to circle for several minutes and then flew off over the river. I was never so sure of anything as I was of the message they seemed to deliver…that my current life path was on course and the universal mother was watching over me. I can still feel the peace and magic of those moments.
– I LOVE this – the idea that there is intuition involved has never been
explained to me before! I knew I felt something but didn't put that label on it – it seemed more
"magical" – this really really helps!! I'm trying to figure out magical thinking! Intuition
is sort of magical but it is more of a skill to develop.
I also LOVe this! What a wonderful experience; thank you for sharing it with us. I like the message you gleaned from it. The fact that you can still feel the peace and magic of the moment puts a stamp of authenticity on it in my mind as I'm sure it does for you.
Thank you for sharing with us. Very inspiring.
Love the owl!
