Here I am

Life seems to consist of one change after another. My cell phone company was bought by another company and suddenly the pin number to check my voicemail wouldn’t work. When I called the old number for customer service, the new company picked up. I was informed that in order for them to help me, I needed to provide a six-digit code. Can you guess what happened when I replied, “I don’t have that code and have no idea where to find it.”? They transferred me to another agent. This happened more than once.

I finally talked to one young woman who asked my date of birth. When I told her, she gasped. She reported that this was the year her grandmother had been born. She kept insisting that I needed the code, to which I replied that I didn’t have the code. Finally, she decided to elevate my service request, which meant I would need to wait for a call.

Since it felt like the two of us had been through so much together, I asked her to give my regards to her grandmother.

“Oh,” she said, “She’s in heaven.”

I wish there was a happy ending to this saga but there’s not. A friend stopped by and I asked her if she would help me upload ID when the call came. She freaked out and said there was NO way I should provide this information over the phone. That I was being scammed.

So I’m thinking about fraud and my next steps. I don’t have access to my voice mail yet.

Who do you trust these days?
