Last week’s post on the subject of lying garnered several thoughtful responses from readers. If you were troubled by the quote I posted that proposed a mature person can lie, I suggest you go to NickyMendenhall.com and scroll to the comment section where you can read five bits of wisdom.

While you are there, you will also be treated to a bonus comment interpreting the image.

Thank you if you were one of the people who wrote me, I appreciate hearing from you.

This week’s message is a gentle reminder about feeling grateful. It is an excerpt from Aging for Beginners by Ezra Bayda who says he heard this from a Buddhist teacher. Reading it brought up all kinds of feelings for me. Let me know what it brings up for you.

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die. So, let us all be thankful.”

Thank you for reading. I am full of gratitude! The image is a unique way of looking at books.

  1. Hi Nicky.
I have pondered these things as well. Allow me to share from my own blog.

    First, about books:

    Compassion Saved me
    Books became my Rescuers
    Love disguised in Print

    Second, about gratitude:

    Be Thankful…
    ~ Nancy

    Be thankful in all circumstances,
    for this is God’s will
    for you who belong
    to Christ Jesus.
    (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

    Notice the word IN.
    Be grateful IN all circumstances,
    not FOR.

I do not have to be nor will I be
    grateful FOR every circumstance,
but I WILL seek out things for which
I can be grateful while in it.
I am not grateful for suffering,
my own or that of others, but
    I am grateful for those
who comfort me and ease my pain.
I am not grateful for sorrow, but
I am grateful for the invitation,
    though difficult, to the
    opening of my soul.

    Practicing gratitude
    changes my heart,
    lightens my load,
    deepens my soul,
and covers my life with joy.
THAT is the will of the
    One who made me.

    Be thankful in all circumstances.
    It is a command and
    also a choice.
It’s a way of living and seeing
    and being in the world.

    O Give Thanks
    Today and Always

    Have a grateful day❣️
    Nancy

  2. Hi Nicky, Fantastic quote about making lemonade out of lemons. Love it! Chris

  3. Hi Nicky.
I believe gratitude is a precursor for joy and peace. How can feelings that connect us to divinity be experienced if we are not grateful for life and the power of eternal, spiritual love….
    ~ Debra

    1. Debra – You make a good case for gratitude! Without gratitude – how indeed can we be connected to the web of love we exist in?
Thank you for reading and commenting – means a lot to me!
